GALAB offers a new and fast ethylene oxide analysis ⚗️
The fumigant ethylene oxide kills bacteria, viruses and fungi. In Germany, however, fumigation of food has been banned since the early 1980s, in the European Union and other countries on the continent since 1990. 🌍
Ethylene oxide has been confirmed to be carcinogenic and mutagenic. Food with residues of ethylene oxide are therefore classified as unsafe for health. Nevertheless, the substance is still used in third countries, for example in oilseeds and sesame seeds from India. 🌱
Due to increasing customer inquiries, GALAB has developed its own analytics, which are available from now on. The measuring method developed is a fast headspace GC-MS analysis. With this method, ethylene oxide can be reliably determined as ethylene oxide (sum of ethylene oxide and 2-chloroethanol, expressed as ethylene oxide) according to the residue definition. 🔬
On October 26, 2020, a new regulation of the EU Commission came into force (Regulation (EU) 2020/1540 of October 22, 2020). This states that 50 percent of the sesame seeds from India must be examined for residues of ethylene oxide. It replaces the previous Regulation (EU) 2019/1793. 📑

Das Begasungsmittel Ethylenoxid tötet Bakterien, Viren und Pilze ab. In Deutschland ist die Begasung von Lebensmittel jedoch seit Anfang der 1980-er Jahre verboten, in der Europäischen Union und anderen Staaten des Kontinents seit 1990. 🌍
Ethylenoxid ist als karzinogen und mutagen bestätigt. Lebensmittel mit Rückständen von Ethylenoxid sind demnach als gesundheitlich unsicher einzustufen. Dennoch wird der Stoff in Drittländern weiter eingesetzt, etwa in Ölsaaten und Sesam mit Ursprung Indien. 🌱
GALAB hat aufgrund zunehmender Kundenanfragen eine eigene Analytik entwickelt, die ab sofort zur Verfügung steht. Bei dem entwickelten Messverfahren handelt es sich um eine schnelle Headspace- GC-MS Analyse. Sofern vom Kunden erwünscht, sind wir auch in der Lage, den Gehalt an freiem Ethylenoxid und das Umsetzungsprodukt 2-Chlorethanol getrennt bestimmen. 🔬
Am 26. Oktober 2020 ist eine neue Verordnung der EU-Kommission in Kraft getreten (Durchführunsgverordnung (EU) 2020/1540 vom 22. Oktober 2020). Diese besagt, dass 50 Prozent der Sesamsamen aus Indien auf Rückstände von Ethylenoxid untersucht werden muss. Sie ersetzt die bisherige Durchführungsverordnung (EU) 2019/1793. 📑
